More than 140 Characters: Twitter for Teaching and Learning

Twitter, the increasingly popular micro-blogging tool, is being used by politicians, celebrities, athletes, journalists, and organizations to get their message out and to communicate with their followers. Twitter is also being used in university classrooms around the country by instructors to communicate with their students and to enhance their students’ learning.

During this interactive session, Sharon Bautista, Program Associate at the Searle Center for Teaching Excellence, and Daniel Gruber, Assistant Professor in Medill’s Integrated Marketing Communications department, will:

- Give a brief overview of Twitter’s functionality
- Address some of the frequently asked questions about Twitter
- Explain with specific examples the ways Twitter can advance learning in higher education by helping students:

  • Actively participate in class
  • Write more effectively
  • Give peer feedback
  • Engage with scholars, professionals and other public figures around the world

-Explain with specific examples the ways Twitter can advance learning in higher education by helping instructors:

  • Share relevant materials with their students
  • Foster an ongoing dialogue with their class
  • Enhance the awareness of class concepts outside the classroom
  • Create an evolving classroom setting
